The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings
At Premier Dental & Implant Center, we believe that all dentistry has a cosmetic element to it, regardless of its primary purpose. Consider, for instance, one of the most time-honored of all dental services, the basic filling. Dental fillings have been used in one form or another for centuries to restore form and function to structurally damaged teeth. In the past, however, while silver amalgam, gold, and other metal fillings did their jobs admirably well, they were far from natural-looking or cosmetically appealing. At Premier Dental & Implant Center, where we believe that healthy smiles should also be beautiful, we have replaced the traditional metal filling with a more aesthetic alternative that is every bit as strong and durable: the tooth-colored filling.
Tooth-colored fillings provide all of the benefits of their metal counterparts, plus more. Dr. Yamen Akhras discusses tooth-colored filling benefits in detail during consultations at his Orland Park, IL, dental office so that patients understand why he prefers these restorations in every aspect over metal fillings. He wants patients to be as knowledgeable as possible about the procedures they are going to undergo so that they can make confident, educated decisions about their oral health care.
Are you a good candidate for tooth-colored fillings? To find out if you could benefit from this extraordinary treatment option, please schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Akhras by contacting Premier Dental & Implant Center today.
What Are the Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings?
Tooth-colored fillings offer a wealth of benefits, especially compared to old-fashioned silver amalgam fillings. Among their many benefits, tooth-colored fillings are:
- More stable when exposed to extreme hot and cold: When silver amalgam and other metal fillings are exposed to extreme hot or cold temperatures, they expand and contract, which can cause them to fracture or become dislodged. While tooth-colored fillings also expand and contract when exposed to extreme temperatures, they do so to a much lesser degree than metal fillings. As a result, they are much less likely to become damaged or to fall out.
- Mercury-free: Tooth-colored fillings do not contain any mercury, unlike silver amalgam fillings. Even though the trace amounts of mercury present in silver amalgam fillings have never been definitively linked to health problems, tooth-colored fillings circumvent the matter altogether by containing no toxins whatsoever.
- Extremely strong and durable: At one point, tooth-colored fillings were nowhere near as strong or as durable as metal fillings. Over time, however, that has changed. At Premier Dental & Implant Center, we use only the finest materials in all our restorations, including our fillings, which are every bit as strong and durable as metal fillings.
- Remarkably natural looking: There can be no disputing that tooth-colored fillings simply look more natural than metal fillings. They blend seamlessly into any smile so that they are virtually indistinguishable from surrounding natural teeth.
