Gum Graft

When you have gum recession due to gum disease, aggressive brushing, or genetics, you may experience tooth sensitivity and other symptoms.

Without treatment, gum recession may worsen. Dr. Yamen Akhras and the team at Premier Dental & Implant Center have a solution: gum grafts.

To learn more about the process and discover if you're a candidate for treatment, visit our welcoming office in Orland Park, IL.

Why Do I Need a Gum Graft?

Your gums protect the jawbones that keep your teeth in place, making them essential. Patients with gum recession can benefit from gum grafting, or a free gingival graft, to add volume to the gumline and improve overall gum health.

You'll only know for certain if you need a gum graft by requesting a consultation with one of our periodontists. They'll explain your condition, like gum trauma or periodontal disease, and chart a good course for treatment. Until then, signs to watch out for include gum inflammation and noticeable tooth roots when you smile.

How Does Gum Grafting
Surgery Work?

Each smile and each case is unique. Our periodontists, Dr. Yamen Akhras and Dr. Samer Shaltoni, will work with you to find a custom solution for your oral wellness concerns.

Consultation

First, you'll visit our Orland Park dental office in person or meet with our dentists for a virtual consultation. We'll assess your oral wellness and gum tissue to determine if gum grafting surgery is right for you. Because we offer multiple periodontal services, we can also perform other treatments, like scaling and root planing.

Anesthetic

You can stay calm with sedation dentistry options like oral conscious sedation and IV sedation. Our dentists can also improve your experience with help from an anesthesiologist.

Incision

We'll wait until you're completely at ease. Then, our dentist will carefully form an opening in your gum tissue and clean your tooth roots.

Gum Graft

Using a process called a connective tissue graft, we can use your own gum tissue from the roof of the mouth to complete treatment. This can minimize any chance of rejection. We may also use donor tissue instead.

Stitches

Once your dentist has acquired the necessary tissue, they will place it over the roots of your affected tooth or teeth. They will ensure it stays in place with stitches.

Recovery

We'll go over aftercare advice, like proper oral hygiene after receiving a gum graft. We may prescribe antibiotics or medication to take as well. As you recover over the next two weeks, you may need to visit our office so we can ensure you're healing properly.

Is Gum Grafting Covered by Insurance?

Because gum grafting can save your teeth, it's a necessary dental procedure. As a result, it's eligible for insurance coverage. You may still have to pay out of pocket for a portion, but we accept a variety of payment options like cash and credit cards to make the process simple. Patients can also apply for CareCredit® financing.
