Most people have minor imperfections that compromise the appearance of their smile, but some are more obvious than others. Gapped teeth draw a lot of attention because they often affect the top, center teeth. There are multiple treatments to mask or conceal gapped teeth, but orthodontic treatments are the only way to eliminate gapped teeth for good.

At Premier Dental & Implant Center, we offer Invisalign® to straighten the teeth and improve alignment. Invisalign® is a discreet and comfortable orthodontic treatment that is completely free of metal, brackets, and wires. We offer Invisalign® for gapped teeth so our Chicago, IL have an effective, comfortable, and convenient way to get the straight, attractive teeth they desire.

What Causes Gapped Teeth?

Gapped teeth are the result of poor spacing or misalignment. When the teeth do not all sit in their proper position, it creates overcrowding or gaps. In some cases, misalignment is minor, and gapped teeth may be the only real consequence of the condition.

However, more often than not, misalignment affects multiple areas of the mouth. Malocclusion problems can alter the bite, place undue stress on the teeth, and make it difficult to keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy. By correcting the bite and improving the position of the teeth, Invisalign® will not only enhance the beauty of the smile but also ensure that patients enjoy a strong, healthy smile.

Treatment

As with braces, Invisalign® addresses gapped teeth by placing subtle but persistent pressure on the teeth and jawbone. The difference between braces and Invisalign® is that Invisalign® is a completely metal-free system. Rather than having brackets and wires placed on the teeth, patients undergoing Invisalign® treatment simply wear clear, plastic aligners.

The aligners are comfortable, hardly noticeable, and removable. Patients must wear the aligners for at least 20 to 22 hours a day, but they are free to remove them for eating, brushing, and flossing. To ensure that the teeth and jaw receive the pressure they need to realign, patients will switch to a new set of aligners approximately every two weeks. Each set of aligners fits just a little different to accommodate the changes in the smile.

Like other orthodontic techniques, Invisalign® treatment takes some time. On average, Invisalign® treatment lasts between 12 and 18 months. Fortunately, Invisalign® offers a number of benefits unique to this orthodontic method, so the time seems to go by quickly for most patients. When treatment is complete, gaps will be gone, the teeth will be straight, and the bite will be properly aligned. Patients will be provided with a customized retainer that should be worn each night to ensure the results of Invisalign® treatment are long-lasting.
