Bone Grafting

Even a single missing tooth can cause jawbone deterioration, which can lead to further oral health issues.

Bone grafting can rebuild your jaw, allowing you to qualify for dental implants to stop further bone loss and repair your smile.

See how our skilled dentists in Orland Park, IL, can restore your oral health and function with a bone graft.

What is Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is a dental procedure in which your dentist uses autograft methods (a patient's own bone tissue), allograft methods (bone tissue taken from a donor), or synthetic methods (a manmade bone material) to fill in areas of bone loss in your jaw. Bone loss can occur when a patient loses teeth. The jawbone no longer receives the stimulation the tooth roots once provided and can begin to deteriorate. If left untreated, this can lead to further tooth loss and a sunken facial appearance.

Dental implants can stop this process. However, patients with existing bone deterioration may not initially qualify for this restorative procedure. A bone graft restores the jaw and creates a solid foundation for the implants. Dental implants can then support restorations like dentures, crowns, and bridges to replace missing teeth.

Bone Graft Treatment Timeline

We offer both in-person and virtual consultations so patients can explore their treatment options on their schedule.
We offer both in-person and virtual consultations so patients can explore their treatment options on their schedule.

Consultation

During your initial consultation at our dental office in Orland Park, IL, your dentist will examine your mouth to determine if you are a candidate for a graft. They will then create a custom treatment plan to address your concerns.

Anesthetic

Your dentist will begin by numbing the area. Oral conscious sedation and IV sedation are also available to ensure you are completely comfortable during your surgery.

Graft

A small incision is made in the gums. Your dentist will then use bone from a donor site, a bone graft from a donor, or synthetic material to strengthen the treatment area. This graft will fuse to your existing tissue to form new bone over time.

Sutures

The gums around the graft site are closed with sutures and sealed to prevent bacteria from entering. Your surgery is then complete.

Recovery

On average, it takes about six months for the graft to fuse to the existing bone. Once that process is complete, you should be ready for implant placement.
